How does mobile broadband work?Mobile Internet works in much the same way as mobile phone communications. Broadband service providers sell wireless Internet access via a suite of packages, which include Pay-As-You-Go options that can be topped up at the user's convenience and contract packages. The service is delivered via 'High Speed Down Link Packet Access' (HSDPA) technology - commonly known as 3g Broadband or third generation mobile technology.To enable laptop Internet connection to mobile broadband you will need a data device to receive and send data over the ISP's wireless network. This may be a data card that plugs into your laptop, a USB modem or USB dongle. Data devices may be purchased from any computer hardware supplier, but it is often easier to buy them direct from your broadband ISP as part of their mobile broadband package. You may even get a free data device when you sign up with an ISP for a 12-month contract or longer! What to consider before buying mobile Internet accessGetting broadband for laptops is a quick and simple process. There are however several different ISPs out there all offering an array of mobile broadband packages. To help you choose the right type of wireless broadband package for your circumstances you should consider the following:Download Speed: How you intend to use your laptop will go a long way to helping you decide how fast your mobile broadband service needs to be. If you download and watch movies online or you are a regular online game player your experience will be enhanced by ISPs who offer high download speeds. The fastest maximum download speeds on the market today are about 7.2 Mbps. Download Limits: Mobile broadband operators impose monthly limits on the amount of data that you can download from the Internet. These download limits are incorporated into the package that you purchase. Typical download limits are between 1GB and 15GB per month - more than enough for the majority of Internet users. Even unlimited wireless broadband access will have some sort of usage limit within the ISP's fair-use policy. If you go over your download allowance your broadband ISP will charge you for additional megabytes used. Coverage: Like mobile phone coverage, mobile broadband coverage is not the same throughout the UK. The more populated areas have the best coverage, while rural areas - especially in Wales and Scotland - have the weakest signal, if any broadband coverage at all. Outside the UK mobile broadband coverage is variable. Most European cities have good network coverage, while outlying areas again have the weakest signals. Prices / Bundled Packages: Most wireless broadband ISPs charge a set-up fee and then either a monthly charge under contract or a pay-as-you-go rate. The prices quoted however are not the maximum that you could be charged. Additional costs may be incurred if you exceed your monthly download limit or access your mobile broadband abroad. Much like in the mobile phone industry, many 3g broadband operators offer bundled Internet packages. Look out for wireless broadband internet deals that include free or discounted time online and/or free mobile broadband equipment like data cards. |
